Brooklyn, NY USA

"The Carmen Staaf Sextet: Standards Reimagined" features Nicole Zuraitis, voice; Dave Ballou, trumpet; Kris Allen, alto sax; Jonathan Michel, bass; George Schuller, drums; Carmen Staaf, piano and arrangements. $8 cover.

The Carmen Staaf Sextet: Standards Reimagined will perform at the Litchfield Jazz Festival mainstage this summer before Carmen heads west to attend the Monk Institute. The project features vocalist Nicole Zuraitis singing Carmen Staaf's quirky, heartfelt and swinging new arrangements of classic American songs by Duke Ellington, Cole Porter and others. Zuraitis brings a storyteller's drama to these familiar songs, colored by the horns of Dave Ballou (trumpet) and Kris Allen (alto sax), and buoyed by the grooving rhythm section of Staaf (piano), Jonathan Michel (bass) and George Schuller (drums).

Myths And Stories at the Bronx Public Library

12.08.13 |2 pm

Bronx, NY USA

A storytelling and music program. Anansi the Spider (Nicole Zuraitis), who is the "storykeeper," begins by telling how she came to possess all of the stories she will share with the children and their families. She tells various stories, including a Maori story from New Zealand, a Haida Raven story, and the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur (a kid-friendly telling). Interspersed with the stories, pieces are played related to the moods or imagery of the stories. Presented by Carmen Staaf Quartet (Nicole Zuraitis, Aidan Carroll, Richie Barshay). For ages 4 and older.

04.28.12 |6 pm

"Sanda Weigl's life is larger than the gypsy lore reflected in her songs.

Weigl was born in Romania and began her musical career in a state-sponsored East German rock band called Team 4. As a teenager in 1968, she was jailed for subversive actions against the communist regime, then forced to work in a labor camp, then kicked out of East Germany completely. And that's just one chapter.

Today, she lives up to her nickname — the Downtown Gypsy Queen of New York — singing in cabarets across the U.S. as part of a Romanian cultural outreach campaign. " -from the NPR Music article at http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=95571355
